In magnificent Ephesus, I walked up the marble steps and into the Library of Roman Senator Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus. I was greeted by four comforting female statutes: Sophia (wisdom), Episteme (knowledge), Ennoia (intelligence), and Arete (virtue). I felt as if I had finally returned home….
The Library cannot fully be re-built. I cannot replenish its shelves with the 12,000 treasured scrolls. The spirit that animated it has long faded away. But an echo of its presence remains and lives in us. Let’s listen for it together, attentively, and maybe we can rekindle its flame in our times. This is my humble tribute to the spirit of the Library of Celsus. Welcome and thank you for visiting.
